Anemia Panel

Our Anemia Panel is a comprehensive set of tests used to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of anemia, or a decrease in red blood cells. These are the cells in the blood that carry oxygen throughout the body. Symptoms such as fatigue, fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath or dizziness could be due to anemia.

Description

(CBC) Complete Blood Count:

This is a routine screening test that measures the concentration of white blood cells (leukocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). This test is used to evaluate a patient’s overall health and is also useful in diagnosing many disorders, such as anemia, infections, leukemia and bleeding problems.

Ferritin:

Ferritin is a protein that binds to iron. Measuring the levels of ferritin in the blood indicates how much iron is stored in the body. This can be useful in determining the cause of anemia, specifically iron deficiency anemia.

Vitamin B12:

This test is used to help determine the cause of anemia, specifically Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. Vitamin B12 is required to make red blood cells. A vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to not having enough red blood cells, which are the cells responsible for carrying oxygen through the body.

Folate (Folic Acid):

Folic Acid is one of the many B vitamins and is required in order for the body to make red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Folic acid deficiency can result in a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia.

(TIBC) Total Iron Binding Capacity:

This test is used to determine if there is too much or not enough iron stored in a patient’s body. This can be useful in determining the cause of anemia, specifically iron deficiency anemia.
